What a difference 113 years makes In The Long White Cloud

"The world has never yet seen a truly great and virtuous nation because in the degradation of woman the very fountains of life are poisoned at their source." New Zealand Female MPs have celebrated suffrage day by recreating a famous photograph from 1905 shot in the country’s parliament featuring no women. The black and white picture taken in the reading room of the parliamentary library in 1905 captured 23 men in three-piece suits.  The 2018 version featured women of diverse age and ethnicity – and one baby girl.

Happiness In The Long White Cloud

Image
We learn to be happy through experiencing a life that is fully led They teach us to remember, and year after year in school this is the constant focus-- but no one teaches us to forget. Forgetting pain and rinsing it out of our system is nigh impossible, but remembering a happy moment, a moment of joy, is often harder because joy and happiness rarely leave a scar or mark. We learn to be happy through experiencing a life that is fully led (whether there is much pain, loss or disappointment).

Trailblazers In The Long White Cloud

Meet the Trailblazers: 125 Kiwi women who changed the world. Explore their extraordinary stories. Eva Rickard was a champion of Māori land rights EVA RICKARD Māori activist 1925-1997 Champion of Māori land rights Eva Rickard was an influential figure in both calls for addressing Māori land rights grievances and also backing women's rights within Māoridom. Rickard's greatest stand came over a 62-acre plot of land near Raglan, which was confiscated by the Government during World War II for the purpose of a military airfield. While that development never went ahead, the land was not given back to iwi. Instead it was developed into a public golf course in 1969.

Echoes beyond the game: the lasting power of a coach's words - In The Long White Cloud

Image
Words are like wildfire, causing so much destruction from a little spark. Remember the old saying, ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me.’ Turns out, the last part isn’t true. Neuroscientific evidence suggests that ‘verbal abuse’ can cause changes to a young person’s brain that may have long-term negative consequences. And in the short-term, we'd suggest the anxiety and fear created wouldn’t be helpful either.   Shouting at kids in sport wouldn’t necessarily, or usually, meet the threshold of ‘verbal abuse’, although we expect we’ve all seen some that might. But we think the research that’s been done by people such as Dr Martin Teicher serves as a good reminder that words do matter … and potentially for a long time.   We recently reflected as a group on all the coaches we've had in sport. We could remember  almost  all of them, but between us there’d been two coaches who were remembered specifically because they’d said something that made

Auckland rugby league Ignore Concussion , In The Long White Cloud

"Auckland Rugby league Fox Memorial trophy - Player Concussion Ignored"  Auckland Rugby League - Nosedives back into the 1980s  I watched the finale of Auckland's Grand final rugby league and was entertained by a fierce competition Hard men , big  , Knockout hits, reminiscent of 80s rugby league , Unfortunately the Match Officials and whistle blowers  took a backward step into the 80s as well. Both officials on and off the field , failed in their duty of care to protect the players of the game. Both sides had players that had clearly Lost Consciousness  during the game. He'll be right , its not twiddle winks ,  overtook the concern for the players welfare Auckland rugby bosses need to get with the program and protect our players. Not Just In the NRL

The Long White Cloud ... Blood Falls

Image
Antarctica's Blood Falls has finally been solved The longstanding mystery surrounding Antarctica's Blood Falls has finally been solved. The deep red falls were first discovered in Antarctica in 1911 where scientists noticed a river had stained the surrounding cliff of ice with a dark red color. Previously, they had believed it was due to algae discoloring the water, however that hypothesis was never verified. Now, thanks to research by the University of Alaska Fairbanks, we know the true origin of the Blood Falls flowing from the Taylor Glacier.  The deep red coloring is due to oxidized iron in brine saltwater, the same process that gives iron a dark red color when it rusts.  When the iron bearing saltwater comes into contact with oxygen the iron oxidizes and takes on a red coloring, in effect dying the water to a deep red color.

Rugby League In The Land Of The Long White Cloud

Image
The Warriors will cross the Tasman to face the Penrith Panthers in a sudden death NRL playoff on Saturday after finishing the regular season in eighth place. When, where and who the Warriors would play in the first week of the finals hinged on the result and the amount of points scored in the final match of round 25 between the Brisbane Broncos and Manly Sea Eagles. Early in the second half, the Broncos seemed certain to win by a margin of more than 32 points - enough to move up to fifth place on the ladder and book a home match against the Warriors in the first week of the playoffs. But a disallowed try for the Brisbane club in the final 90 seconds kept the winning margin to just 32 points which meant Penrith finished fifth and earned the right to host the eighth placed Warriors at Sydney's ANZ Stadium at 7.40pm (NZT).
